A beautiful wander through Upper Wensleydale: leaving from Hawes, taking in the hamlet of Burtersett, turning west to amble through the pastures under Wether Fell to Gayle, returning along the River Ure via Haylands Bridge and back in to Hawes. We will be stopping to take in the breath-taking views in all directions, listen to the birds and absorb ourselves in the unique working landscape of Upper Wensleydale.

Walk Type:

Nature Engagement

Group Size:

12

Terrain Type:

Hill and Moorland

Paths Type:

Rough-tracks

Ascent Type:

Undulating

The route is gently undulating throughout, with around 130m of ascent/descent, and the paths vary from rough track, minor road, flagged path and open pasture. There are lots of narrow squeeze stiles to get through and we do have a very short section (150m) to walk alongside the main road towards the end of the walk.

Walk Leader - Jo L.

Jo is a qualified Mountain Leader & she’s also qualified in First Aid for Mental Health & Outdoor First Aid – so you know she’ll keep you safe and make your Wellness Walk a supportive space to get out into nature and engage with other folks.

Jo is based in Cumbria but adores the Dales – so she’ll pop up in different places from time to time.
Jo tells us her favourite local walk is The slog up to Great Shunner out of Hardraw – part of the Pennine Way. In Spring & early summer its alive with ground nesting birds. Lower down it’s not uncommon to see red squirrels scampering along the walls, the longer grasses either side of the stony path are alive with butterflies & as you climb the walled path sits high with the fells dropping away to each side. The Lapwings fly almost level with you & you’re so close to them you can hear them inhaling before they let out their characteristic peewit call.

Her favourite walk anywhere is in the Dales (of course!) and is in Wharfedale – up Cam Head from Kettlewell and to Buckden – coming back along the river – view that have put a smile on her face for over 30 years.
Jo’s fun fact is that she drank out of a puddle on the last day of the Pennine Way.

Jo’s top tip is…don’t drink out of puddles!
