Walking out of the Dark
How I Learned to Love Life Again
By Kelvyn James

“If someone carries a great weight for too long, one of two things will happen: either they will break, or they will get stronger.”
This is a book about both.

Kelvyn James was a successful climber, entrepreneur, and mountaineer when his mother was brutally murdered by her husband. That moment shattered not just his family, but also his sense of self. Grief, guilt, trauma, and the long shadows of a violent childhood came crashing in. This is not just the story of what happened — it’s the story of what happened after.

Told with raw honesty, dark humour, and breath-taking vulnerability, Walking out of the Dark is a memoir of falling apart and fiercely, determinedly finding your way back. A poetic, beautifully told, and ultimately life-affirming journey through trauma, mountains, memory and meaning. From climbing accidents to courtroom trials, from feeling broken to building a charity that helps others heal, this is the story of learning to carry what once felt unbearable. This is a book about loss, resilience, and ultimately, the power of love.

More than a memoir, it’s a lifeline.
For anyone who’s ever stood at the edge of despair, been lost or broken – all those who’ve wondered if things could get better – this book will remind you; yes they can.

  1. After my walk this morning, I was very pleased to find my book had arrived, written and signed by Kelvyn.

It’s a harrowing autobiographical story which becomes powerfully inspirational. It’s made all the more impactful by having followed so many of K’s posts on Blipfoto and discovering how these disturbing life events have given rise to his extraordinary inner strength, his courage and his determination to give back to others.

    Humbling.

I haven’t read a book for some time. I haven’t sat down and read without being able to stop for years. I read and read until the last minute before going out in the evening.

  2. Kelvyn’s book Walking out of the Dark, I can say without doubt that it is simultaneously the most visceral and beautiful writing I’ve ever had the privilege to read. the honesty of the words and Kelvyn’s use of the great outdoors as a vehicle to reach inner peace hit a nerve within me. I won’t lie it’s a damn hard read but one you won’t regret

  3. This is an inspirational book. The story and the messages have application across all walks of life. At times the background story feels like extreme fiction, and you have to tell yourself it’s a real story. Its not the easiest read, but it has power and momentum and is well worth the effort.

Kelvyn’s book Walking Out Of The Dark is written straight from the heart. It is a shocking account of the child abuse he suffered from a very young age and later the violent murder of his beloved Mum.
The start was hard to read as unlike a novel I knew this had actually happened.
I felt sad and shed tears for Kelvyn and his Mum, reading about the extreme cruelty of his stepfather.
However, after a harrowing start the book leads to a more positive account of how walking the hills and climbing mountains helped him out of the dark depths of his past. The descriptions of the places he found himself in are beautifully written. I found myself smiling when he wrote about wearing new bright clothes instead of being always dressed in black or grey.
The happy ending to this account of Kelvyn’s life is that he founded Wellness Walks – a charity to help others to ‘Walk out of the Dark.
For anyone who has experienced life changing trauma in their life and also those who have not – this is an inspiring book.

  5. First time I have read a book since I was at school which was a long time ago. I read 1 chapter at a time, what kelvyn as been through is alot and to come out the other end is an achievement, the book was so inspirational, it was a brilliant read.

  6. Most books of this variety add some measure of a message, but this book is on another level. The messages the way it is written, just exceptional. Top stuff.

  7. A truly inspirational book recounting a very difficult upbringing and subsequent family tragedy. I couldn’t put it down. So glad to hear that Kelvyn learned to love life again, Thank you.

  8. A hard, but fabulous read. It shows that there can be light at the end of the tunnel, or up the mountain in this case. A must read.

  9. I’m usually a “skimmer” when I read but I couldn’t skim through this book, “Walking Out of the Dark – How I learned to Love Life again” by Kelvyn James! I had to read every single word and let it seep into my very being – because from the very beginning – and by the end, I knew just how much courage it had taken Kelvyn to write it. What a story and how honest Kelvyn was, but all through the book, although he is in “the abyss” for so long, I believe that he needed to be there to find out that in this world “something as good as now” can emerge from an evil deed if only we let love into our lives. We were promised right at the beginning that Kelvyn’s story had a happy ending and it certainly does. I haven’t walked – not properly anyway – following major back surgery a couple of years ago but reading this book has made me want to get out into nature and walk – perhaps not quite like a Kelvyn and certainly not up mountains – but to find out what I am capable of doing and also to find the love that is in this world – in every person with whom we come into contact – both now and in the future. In Kelvyn’s own words “In finally coming to understand and find an acceptance of the how, what and why of my life, I’ve learned that I don’t need to push myself right to the edge to find my inner peace.” I’m so glad that Kelvyn eventually found that inner peace, even though it took him 10 long and difficult years – and I pray he will never lose it. If you want to be challenged, or if you are going through difficult times, do read this book – you will be inspired and you won’t be disappointed and hopefully you too, will find that inner peace.
