A Typical Lowland Day

This day will take the form of a typical Lowland Day – but with lots of opportunities for asking questions, leading a leg if you want, practicing leadership and navigation. We can add in additional training or practice, but I’m equally happy to offer people to do a leg as if it were an assessment.
The aim will be to make a journey, meet other people on the Lowland Journey and to develop skills and confidence.

This day if free for any Wellness Walks trainees, others are asked to make a donation on a pay-what-you-can basis.

Walk Leader - Kelvyn James

Kelvyn James is a working International Mountain Leader who has guided clients all over the world – here in the UK he’s a Provider and Course Director for Mountain Training courses and specialises in mental health support sessions. He’s also an Outdoor First Aid, First Aid for Mental Health & Safeguarding Instructor as well as having qualifications in psychology & counselling.

Kelvyn is also the founder of  Wellness Walks and is passionate about the benefits of giving people the opportunity to get out into nature. He has lived experience of mental health issues and specifically cites time spent in the outdoors and, crucially, time spent with other people, as fundamental to his own journey to thriving.

Kelvyn’s favourite walk in the UK is a loop of the fabulous Grisedale Valley – on a good day this can be via the tops and its famous Striding Edge – but he’s just as happy to wander around the valley with his dog,  the Wellness Walks mascot Missy Mischief.

His top tip is – we should all be more dog – learn to make every day an adventure.

MEETING PLACE - Wilf's Cafe Stavely

The parking by Wilf’s is now shockingly expensive – fortunately there is free on street parking nearby – arrive early and walk to Wilfs as we’ll be starting with coffee and a chat.

Donations

All of our walks are provided free of charge thanks to our funders, generous donations and our passionate volunteers. If you’re interested in supporting wellness walks by volunteering or donating please follow the links below. We look forward to walking with you!

Facilities

We’ll start and finish in the cafe. Missy will be on this walk – she’s very well behaved – if your dog isn’t then please don’t bring them as it spoils other peoples learning. If they are – I look forward to meeting them!

Informed Consent - we want you to know what risk is involved

While we take every precaution to ensure your safety on our walks (physically, psychologically and emotionally), all outdoor activities involve an inherent and unavoidable risk of an accident occurring that could lead to personal injury. All of our Walk Leaders are qualified in First Aid and carry emergency equipment to deal with emergencies. Walk Leaders are also trained to dynamically alter the route or plan for the day based on numerous potential factors - any decision to do so is fully authorised and expected by Wellness Walks. All participants should take an active role in minimising risks - so if you have a concern please speak up, if you feel unwell or unable to continue tell the leader.

  • Lowland Walks

These walks will follow paths, trails and lanes that are clearly visible on both the ground and the map (with the exception of very minor alterations). The risk on these walks  is low - but traffic, waterways and other hazards may still be encountered.

Participants are required to read the walk description and kit list and may not be allowed to take part on the walk if they do not have suitable clothing or footwear.
