Black Combe 2025

This walk is only open to residents of Millom. A firm favourite on the Wellness Walks calendar – an ascent of the mountain that you can see from everywhere in Millom. On the right day the views are simply stunning – into the centre of the Lakes, across to the Isle of Man and even Snowdonia.

Walk Leader - Kelvyn James

Kelvyn James is a working International Mountain Leader who has guided clients all over the world – here in the UK he’s a Provider and Course Director for Mountain Training courses and specialises in mental health support sessions. He’s also an Outdoor First Aid, First Aid for Mental Health & Safeguarding Instructor as well as having qualifications in psychology & counselling.

Kelvyn is also the founder of  Wellness Walks and is passionate about the benefits of giving people the opportunity to get out into nature. He has lived experience of mental health issues and specifically cites time spent in the outdoors and, crucially, time spent with other people, as fundamental to his own journey to thriving.

Kelvyn’s favourite walk in the UK is a loop of the fabulous Grisedale Valley – on a good day this can be via the tops and its famous Striding Edge – but he’s just as happy to wander around the valley with his dog,  the Wellness Walks mascot Missy Mischief.

His top tip is – we should all be more dog – learn to make every day an adventure.

Informed Consent - we want you to know what risk is involved

While we take every precaution to ensure your safety on our walks (physically, psychologically and emotionally), all outdoor activities involve an inherent and unavoidable risk of an accident occurring that could lead to personal injury. All of our Walk Leaders are qualified in First Aid and carry emergency equipment to deal with emergencies. Walk Leaders are also trained to dynamically alter the route or plan for the day based on numerous potential factors - any decision to do so is fully authorised and expected by Wellness Walks. All participants should take an active role in minimising risks - so if you have a concern please speak up, if you feel unwell or unable to continue tell the leader.

  • Mountain Walks

These walks will be in remote and potentially difficult terrain. There will be ascent and descent and steep rocky ground might be encountered. The consequences of accidents in such an area are more severe. Temperatures on the UK's mountain tops can be significantly lower than in the valleys and winds will also feel much stronger. Participants are required to read the walk description and make an honest self-appraisal of their ability to complete the day.

Please note the suggested kit list and take into consideration these factors.
