Askham Fell Post New Year Amble.
This will be a post Christmas new year walk around the beautiful fells around Askham.
Leaving from the Open Air Pool we make our way up to the open access land towards Heughscar Hill to bag our first peak. We take a meander over to The Cockpit (Askham Fell and Barton Fell have more than 100 Bronze Age sites and Cockpit Stone Circle is the most obvious and the most well known). Next its onto the peak of the day Load Pot Hill standing at 672 meters. A bit of back tracking to find a Path up Authurs Pike down to White Knott where we retrace our path via Cockpit and our return journey to the start. This will be a strenuous / Demanding walk.

Ascent Type:
This is a testing 18k walk with a challenging ascent up to Loadpot Hill. The ground however is grass and off path terrain. No challenging rocky parts but could well be very wet/boggy under foot. Please wear boots and I recommend Gaiters if you have them. Walking poles would be advantageous too.
mixed weather
We’re expecting mixed weather on this walk – so make sure you bring waterproofs AND an extra warm layer or two. Please ensure you have warm hat and gloves too!!
Walk Leader - Wayne
Wayne is a qualified Mountain Leader & he’s also qualified in First Aid for Mental Health & Outdoor First Aid – so you know he’ll keep you safe and make your Wellness Walk a safe and supportive space.
Wayne served in the forces and Emergency Services – but when he retired he moved to Penrith to be closer to the mountains he loves – and nowadays you’ll find him in the Lake District, the Dales, and Scotland – planning adventures and spending time in nature – something he says he knows has helped support his own mental health during a tough career.
Wayne’s favourite walk locally is to head up onto Askham Fell above Ullswater – from there the views into the higher hills are often stunningly dramatic. Wayne’s favourite walk anywhere is a firm Wellness Walks favourite too – Cadair Idris in North Wales – where legend says a famous Welsh Giant would often sit and survey his lands.
Wayne’s top tip is to always remember to spend some time “in the moment” – pausing and appreciating the beautiful scenery around you and the people you’re with.

Informed Consent - we want you to know what risk is involved
While we take every precaution to ensure your safety on our walks (physically, psychologically and emotionally), all outdoor activities involve an inherent and unavoidable risk of an accident occurring that could lead to personal injury. All of our Walk Leaders are qualified in First Aid and carry emergency equipment to deal with emergencies. Walk Leaders are also trained to dynamically alter the route or plan for the day based on numerous potential factors - any decision to do so is fully authorised and expected by Wellness Walks. All participants should take an active role in minimising risks - so if you have a concern please speak up, if you feel unwell or unable to continue tell the leader.
Mountain Walks
These walks will be in remote and potentially difficult terrain. There will be ascent and descent and steep rocky ground might be encountered. The consequences of accidents in such an area are more severe. Temperatures on the UK's mountain tops can be significantly lower than in the valleys and winds will also feel much stronger. Participants are required to read the walk description and make an honest self-appraisal of their ability to complete the day.
Please note the suggested kit list and take into consideration these factors.
Sorry, This walk is experiencing technical difficulties! Please check back later and if the problem persists contact our team.
