An Easier entry to learning the skills to head into the hills
Wellness Walks deliver two types of one-day personal skills (informal, non-qualification) courses:
Hill Skills – skills day 1, putting it together day2 options
Mountain Skills –Â skills day 1, putting it together day2 options
Both these courses are basically the first day of our official two-day Mountain Training Skills courses – and if you book the second day (up to six weeks later) at the same time we’ll register you with Mountain Training and issue a certificate.Â
but… you can simply do the first day if that best suits your needs and/or aims.
Both courses starts with coffee & a chat, getting to know the other people on the course and gaining an understanding of basic planning for a hill or mountain day. The Tutor will outline the plans for the course before you head out – and there’ll be an opportunity to borrow any kit you might not have yet.
Both courses will cover:
Planning
 Walking Skills
Clothing & Equipment
Weather
Navigation
Environmental Knowledge
Emergency Procedures
What's involved??
Both courses are run in a really relaxed way – there’s no assessment or test – simply an opportunity for you to take away some foundational skills to help you be able to plan and make happen your own fun days in hill or mountain terrain.
Details of each course are below.
Hill Skills
A Hill Skills course is your key to getting started in countryside and moorland walking. No previous hill walking experience is required because the content of the course is aimed at beginners.
If you do have some experience of hill walking but aren’t confident about planning walks, navigating and understanding the equipment required, then a Hill Skills course is an ideal way to learn.
Key points:
No previous experience necessary.
Typically 2 x 8 hour days.
4-5 hours outdoors each day.

Â
We’ll look at equipment, planning, maps & apps – including lots of fun ways to learn new stuff.
Then we’ll head out on a learning journey – learning to use our map, recognise features, what the compass does and how to keep ourselves safe and happy on a walk in remote but not mountainous countryside.
Mountain Skills
A Mountain Skills course is an ideal choice for people interested in exploring mountainous terrain and want to develop their confidence in the mountains.
Participants should have some basic hill walking experience and a reasonable level of fitness. Courses are run in the higher mountain areas of the UK and Ireland.
Key points:
A level of fitness required to complete 2 mountain days.
Typically 2 x 9hr days.
Usually 5-6hrs outdoors.
steeper, often rocky terrain.
